Dog Was Passed Over For Being ‘Too Old’ And ‘Too Mean’ But Neither Was True

Misunderstood Because of His Looks

What makes a dog look “mean”? That’s a question Sully, a 5-year-old Pittie, silently pondered during his long days in a small shelter kennel. People would glance at his face and immediately pass by, assuming he was aggressive—when all he really wanted was affection. Night after night, he curled up alone, hoping someone would see past his appearance and recognize the sweet dog for who he truly was. But the days dragged on, and no one came.

His Second Chance Begins With a Gentle Hand

Then, everything changed. Julia Correll, a volunteer with Desert Dog Project in Arizona, laid eyes on Sully—then called Gindo—at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control. His sorrowful expression and stiff gait from severe arthritis broke her heart. Though he was just five years old, he looked far older due to poor living conditions and untreated health issues. Julia couldn’t believe such a loving soul was being overlooked. Sully had been picked up as a stray alongside another adult dog and puppies—all of whom were adopted. But Sully was left behind.

A Bond Too Strong to Break

Julia decided to take Sully out of the shelter for day trips, where he flourished. They’d lie together on a blanket at the park, soaking up the sun. Sully, once shy and stiff, rolled over for belly rubs and snuggled as if he’d known Julia forever. Though their relationship began as a foster situation, it didn’t take long for Sully to win Julia’s heart completely. She officially adopted him, calling him “the easiest foster dog I’ve ever had.” Sully got his very own stroller to accompany Julia everywhere and custom braces to ease the strain on his elbows.

Living His Best Life at Last

With regular joint injections, physical therapy, and acupuncture, Sully began thriving. He loved going on city walks, meeting new people, and finally living like a regular dog. But his joy didn’t stop there. Julia surprised him with the best gift of all: a dog sibling named Effie. Sully instantly took to her with the gentleness of a seasoned big brother. For the second time in his life, Sully had a family—but this time, it was forever. Misjudged by many but loved unconditionally by one, Sully’s days of waiting are finally behind him.
