Luck. Many dogs don’t have it. Yet, it’s so important, sometimes even crucial, for their well-being.
Lucky, a Labrador Retriever rescued from a high-euthanasia shelter and brought to AGWC Rockin’ Rescue Animal Adoption Center in California, is one of the dogs who, in fact, hasn’t had that ‘lucky’ life path.
Due to neglect by a previous owner, Lucky’s story took a turn for the worse, and he’s been trying to recover ever since. So far, this pup has spent nearly 1,500 days in the shelter, waiting for that perfect shot at happiness.
The ‘Lucky’ Story That Wasn’t Quite Lucky
When the volunteers at AGWC Rockin’ Rescue first saw Lucky on June 29, 2021, little did they know that he would become one of their longest residents.
Sadly, due to neglect, Lucky grew up to be not-so-desirable ‘adoption material.’
The reason?
All his previous owners did was betray him.
“Lucky was purchased as a puppy from a breeder. But instead of growing up in a safe, loving home, he was abandoned at a dog training facility when his owner no longer wanted him. Things only got worse from there,” the California rescue stated on its website.
After abandonment, his next owner, a dog trainer, physically abused him for years. It all resulted in Lucky becoming a reactive dog with a biting history, who ultimately ended up in a high-euthanasia shelter in California.
But instead of saying a forever goodbye, the kind rescuers at AGWC Rockin’ Rescue decided to help him. Lucky was transferred to their facility, and he’s been trying to recover ever since.
In the most recent TikTok, the rescue posted a video of Lucky, explaining that he’d soon reach his 1,500-milestone in the shelter. Sadly, due to his past, people often walked past him as he wasn’t exactly the epitome of the ideal pet.
Lucky, who’s been in training for months, requires an experienced owner and a no-small-children household.
But other than that, he’s practically a dog with no flaws!
Still Waiting For A Chance
One thing is for sure: being in the shelter for so long has definitely taken a toll on Lucky. Even though his caregivers have spent time mentally and physically stimulating this pup, Lucky’s situation is slowly turning him into a depressed, shut-down dog.
Deep down, there’s no doubt that Lucky knows there’s life beyond his kennel, and he’s silently begging to get one.
Thanks to his rescuers, he’s now a different dog, ready to give and receive love.
“Today, he’s a completely different dog. He enjoys slow walks, quiet moments, and spending time with the volunteers he knows and trusts. He’s kind, responsive, and incredibly loyal once a bond is built,” the rescue concludes.
In an ideal environment, Lucky’s preferences are walkies, playing fetch and spending time with hoomans.
Lucky also adores enrichment toys and loves being busy, which makes him an ideal pet for active families. He learns quickly, is eager to please and would love to spend his days exploring the world.
Hopefully, his story will be heard. He truly deserves it.
