13-Year-Old Dachshund Mix Abandoned With a Heartbreaking Note

Posted on October 9, 2025 by admin

When a woman in Fayetteville, Georgia, stepped outside her home last week, she noticed something unusual near the edge of her property — a small, trembling dachshund mix with a worn collar and a folded piece of paper tucked nearby.

The note, written in shaky handwriting, revealed a heartbreaking truth: the dog, a 13-year-old named Reese, had been left behind by her family.

A Lonely Goodbye on a Quiet Georgia Morning

The message read with aching honesty. Its writer confessed that life had become too overwhelming.

They spoke of love, of regret, and of having “no time” left for the little dog who had once been their companion.

Between caring for four children and struggling to manage daily life, the person had chosen to let Reese go — not into a shelter, but into uncertainty.

The woman who found Reese could see the sadness in her eyes. Her fur was soft but slightly matted, her small body thin, and she moved slowly, unsure of where to go.

Despite everything, Reese wagged her tail gently when the woman spoke to her. She wasn’t angry. She was simply waiting — for someone to understand her.

ROYAL ANIMAL REFUGE

Unable to turn her away, the woman brought Reese into her house, fed her, and gave her a warm place to rest.

She couldn’t keep her permanently, but she knew this little dog deserved more than a lonely ending. So she shared Reese’s story in a private Facebook group, hoping that someone — anyone — might help.

A Shelter’s Compassion and a Chance at Healing

Within hours, the post caught the attention of Royal Animal Refuge, a well-known local rescue in Fayetteville.

When shelter director Mariel Weigand saw Reese’s photo and read about her abandonment, her heart broke.

“It’s never easy to see something like that,” she later shared. “But sometimes, people just don’t know where to turn. That doesn’t make it right, but it helps us understand.”

Weigand explained that in their county, not all animal control facilities accept owner surrenders. That means people who are desperate — or who simply feel out of options — sometimes make heartbreaking decisions.

Abandonment isn’t legal or kind, but it often stems from fear and lack of information rather than cruelty.

Royal Animal Refuge immediately stepped in. They arranged to pick up Reese and have her checked by their vet. Despite her age, Reese’s spirit was strong.

She still had that spark — the gentle curiosity that older dogs carry when they’ve seen both love and loss.

Weigand reached out to Robyn Klein, one of the refuge’s most trusted foster caregivers, asking if she could take Reese in for a while. Robyn agreed without hesitation.

But when she brought the little dachshund to her mother, Suzy Reeves, something unexpected happened.

Suzy, an older woman who had recently lost her own longtime companion dog, felt an instant connection.

As soon as Reese walked up to her, tail wagging, Suzy knelt down and smiled through tears. “Oh, sweetheart,” she whispered, “you’re safe now.”

That moment changed everything.

Finding Love Again, One Gentle Touch at a Time

At first, Suzy planned only to foster Reese — to care for her temporarily while the rescue searched for a permanent family.

But as the days went by, it became clear that the two needed each other more than anyone realized.

Reese followed Suzy from room to room, curling up beside her feet when she sat in her favorite chair.

At night, she would rest her head on Suzy’s lap, as if she had finally found the quiet comfort she’d been missing. Suzy began buying her small toys — soft squeaky ones that Reese carried proudly around the house.

A simple stuffed chicken became her favorite, a symbol of her new start.

“She’s already part of the family,” Robyn told the shelter director. “Mom keeps saying she can’t imagine the house without her.”

When adoption day arrived, the paperwork was just a formality. Suzy signed her name with a smile and held Reese close.

After so much loss on both sides — a woman grieving her old dog, and a dog grieving her old life — two hearts had found healing in each other.

Weigand couldn’t hide her happiness when she shared the news. “It’s a beautiful ending for Reese,” she said softly. “She’s going to be loved for the rest of her days.”

Today, Reese spends her mornings napping in a patch of sunlight on Suzy’s porch and her evenings snuggled beside her new mom, surrounded by warmth and kindness.

Her story could have ended in heartbreak, but instead, it became a gentle reminder of what compassion can do.

Even when life feels too heavy to carry, love has a way of finding its way back — sometimes in the shape of a tiny, gray-faced dachshund who just needed one more chance.
