Taka, a brave dog, found himself in a life-threatening situation when a fire erupted, trapping him inside a screened porch.
With smoke and flames surrounding him, his family couldn’t reach him, forcing them to make a heartbreaking decision to leave the house while Taka remained inside.
Miraculously, Taka managed to escape the blaze and ran down the street. A neighbor discovered him severely injured, with burns covering much of his body, and rushed him to a nearby emergency veterinarian.

Emily Martin, a veterinarian at Care More Animal Hospital in Martinez, Georgia, remembered the harrowing scene. “Taka had burns around his eyes, mouth, ears, and belly,” she shared with The Dodo.
The severity of his injuries, including potential inhalation burns, was initially unclear, prompting the veterinary team to transfer him to the University of Georgia for specialized oxygen treatments.
Despite his critical condition, there was a ray of hope. Taka’s cries of pain resonated through the hospital, but Martin and her team were committed to saving him.

“His case really touched my heart,” Martin admitted. “He calmed down when someone sat with him and sang to him, even though he was in agony.”
Realizing the extent of his condition, Taka’s family decided to let him remain in Martin’s care. Understanding the importance of company during his recovery, Martin took Taka home to ensure he wouldn’t be alone.
“I stayed up with him all night, so we were both pretty exhausted the next day,” Martin explained. They took a much-needed nap together in one of the kennels, strengthening their bond even further.

Martin’s dedication to Taka is evident. She’s deeply invested in seeing him recover fully. “He’s experienced something so traumatic yet continues to push through,” she said. “Taka is incredibly resilient.”
Although Martin can’t keep him indefinitely—she has five dogs and a seven-month-old baby—she’s determined to find Taka a loving home.
She praises his gentle nature, noting, “Despite his pain, he’s never bitten anyone. Instead, he finds comfort in people.”

Taka still has a long journey to recovery, as his injuries left him blind and scarred. Yet, he is making progress, feeding and attending to his needs independently thanks to the exceptional care provided by Martin and the staff at Care More.
His fight is far from over, but Taka’s perseverance shines bright.
