A man was away on a business trip and, feeling eager to check in with his family, he decided to call his wife to let her know he had arrived safely. When he dialed the number, a little girl’s voice answered, “Hello?”
The man, presumably her father, spoke with warmth, “Hi, honey. This is Daddy. Is Mommy near the phone?” He was expecting to have a quick conversation with his wife.
However, the little girl’s response caught him off guard. “No, Daddy. She’s upstairs in the bedroom with Uncle Paul.”
Confusion and concern crept into the man’s voice as he replied, “But, honey, you haven’t got an Uncle Paul.”
Unperturbed, the little girl insisted, “Oh, yes I do, and he’s upstairs in the room with Mommy, right now.”
The man needed a moment to process this unexpected revelation. Then he came up with an unusual plan. “Uh, OK, then this is what I want you to do. Put the phone down on the table, run upstairs, knock on the bedroom door, and shout to Mommy that Daddy’s car just pulled into the driveway.”
The little girl followed her father’s instructions, and after a few minutes, she returned to the phone. Her father inquired about what happened.
She described a chaotic scene, “Well, Mommy got all scared, jumped out of bed with no clothes on, and ran around screaming. Then she tripped over the rug, hit her head on the dresser and now she isn’t moving at all!”
Horrified, the father exclaimed, “Oh my God! What about your Uncle Paul?”
The little girl’s response was equally shocking, “He jumped out of the bed with no clothes on, too. He was all scared and he jumped out of the back window and into the swimming pool. But I guess he didn’t know that you took out the water last week to clean it. He hit the bottom of the pool and I think he’s dead.”
A long, chilling silence ensued before the father cautiously inquired, “Swimming pool? … Is this 486-5731?”
