“After I say goodnight and lock up, I always come back to check on Scooter. He’s so sweet that he tucks himself in at night. With a prayer, someone will adopt this boy soon…”
After his owner died, a senior Chihuahua’s life changed dramatically for the worse. He ended up on the streets like many other homeless animals and found himself sleeping in an animal shelter.
Therefore, he found refuge in the only coping mechanisms available to him…by hiding and sobbing himself to sleep every night.
Scooter’s owner used to tuck him in at night, but since they’re no longer there, he takes it upon himself to make sure he’s tucked in snugly every single night. He pulls the blanket over his head gently and drifts off into a peaceful sleep.
Although it may have looked sweet to outsiders, the fear on his face was always evident.
The staff at the Humane Society of Branch County knew he was a good dog, but they were unsure if an elderly dog would get much attention from potential adopters.
“I came back to say goodnight and lock up. This is Scooter. He tucks himself in at night. I hope someone adopts this boy soon…”
No-kill shelter manager Jan Nageldinger told The Dodo that at one point, she thought Scooter may never leave the shelter.
“But we had the space…We never turn them away.”
Nevertheless, after the shelter published a photo of Scooter tucked under his comforter, he started getting more attention!
The pup became popular very suddenly and many people wanted to adopt him. Jessica Lynn Howard, who had already adopted two other Chihuahuas from the shelter, was the lucky person chosen to take him home.
Jessica told The Dodo that she saw Jan’s Facebook post, just like the rest of us. She was lying in bed with her husband Tim when she had an overwhelming urge to adopt him. “I said, ‘I have to go get him,’” Jessica explained through tears.
Scooter isn’t only getting a new home– he’s also getting some new friends to play with!
Jan and Tim live on a sprawling farm where, aside from the other five dogs, Scooter spends his days playing outdoors. He’s much happier now that he has so much space to run around!
When it’s time for a nap, Scooter takes one ON TOP of the blanket.
Although his personality has changed for the better, some things about Scooter remain unchanged. For example, he’s still very attached to his normal bedtime routine.
” Jessica reminisced, “He still tucks himself in at bedtime… I’ve tried to do it for him before but he would rather do it himself. He has to get the covers just right. Watching him is really cute.”
If a single post from an old dog like Scooter can move the world, think of what else it could do for animals in need of a home.
