Dog Seriously Injured in Hit-and-Run Drags Himself to Safety—Now He’s Looking for a Loving Home

Buster wants to start his next chapter with a family.

The dog arrived at Florida Urgent Rescue (FUR) this year after being found on the streets of the Bahamas as an injured stray. Before his rescue, Buster was partially paralyzed in a hit-and-run accident. After the incident, the dog saved himself from further injury by dragging himself off the road.

When Florida Urgent Rescue met the pup after he was flown to Florida from the Bahamas, his kneecaps were raw, and the skin on his stomach was infected from having to drag his back legs behind him for over a month.

“In rescue, we see the worst in people and the best. Despite all the people who passed him by on the streets, some amazing people jumped into action to save his life,” the team at FUR said in a statement about how Good Samaritans helped with Buster’s rescue.

A vet with FUR gave Buster a thorough examination after his arrival and found the hit-and-run accident caused a spinal injury, which led to the dog’s rear-end paralysis.

Buster has a noticeable zest for life despite enduring these hardships, according to FUR. So the rescue reached out to the pet mobility company Walkin’ Pets to get a Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchair for the canine.

“Even if he can’t use his back legs, it doesn’t mean he can’t have a wonderful life,” FUR added.

According to FUR and Walkin’ Pets, Buster has taken quickly to his wheelchair.

“Buster is starting to show some reflexive movements, which is encouraging, as it gives us hope that spinal walking may still be a possibility down the road. His personality and confidence have taken off. He’s a completely different dog than when he first arrived, and his wheels are a huge part of that. They’ve given him the confidence boost he needed, and he loves being in them,” FUR said.

Currently, Buster is living in a foster home, where he is thriving. But there is still one step left in his recovery journey. Buster needs a forever home.

In Buster’s adoption profile, FUR noted that the dog needs extra help due to his paralysis but is “unstoppable” in his wheelchair
