While heading to a camping trip, a young woman and her boyfriend spotted a tiny stray puppy by the roadside. Its face was shockingly swollen, making it look almost unrecognizable.
At first, they thought it had a tumor, but something in its fearful yet pleading eyes made the young woman hesitate. Unsure of what to do, she carefully picked up the trembling pup and carried it to their car.
The puppy was nervous, hesitant to trust the strangers offering it water. After a moment of uncertainty, the young woman made a decision—she couldn’t leave it behind. They rushed to a vet, hoping for answers.

At the clinic, the vet examined the puppy and determined the swelling was caused by a snake bite, not a tumor. The venom had caused severe inflammation, making its tiny face balloon in size.
Treatment required a series of injections over several days. Though just a few months old, the puppy endured the pain quietly, its eyes welling up as if longing for its mother’s comfort.

By the next day, signs of improvement were visible. The swelling had gone down, though the pup’s chin remained puffy. Slowly, it started showing more curiosity about its surroundings, taking cautious steps toward its rescuers.
On the third day, another vet visit was needed. Knowing the puppy still struggled to eat, the young woman carefully fed it soft millet porridge with a syringe. Her patience paid off.

By the fourth day, the swelling had decreased significantly, and the puppy began eating on its own, quickly developing a love for dry dog food.
As the days passed, the puppy’s face returned to normal. The young woman, grateful for the chance to rescue it during the Dragon Boat Festival, decided to name it Duanwu in honor of the occasion.
Just as it seemed like the worst was over, new wounds appeared on Duanwu’s chin and around its eyes. Determined not to give up, she rushed back to the vet. The pup needed debridement surgery to heal properly.

Duanwu’s recovery was slow, but the young woman’s family rallied around, showering it with love and care. Before long, the once-fearful pup transformed into a joyful companion, following its new family members wherever they went.
What started as a chance encounter became a life-changing moment for both Duanwu and its rescuer. From a scared and injured stray to a beloved pet, Duanwu’s story is proof that kindness can turn even the most desperate situations into something beautiful.
