I’ve always been the one to keep track of every penny. Not because I’m controlling, but because numbers made sense. They were predictable. My husband, Eric, on the other hand, was the opposite.
One Friday night, during my usual ritual of scrolling through our bank statement, something caught my eye: a $380 charge I couldn’t place. I asked Eric about it, but his response was defensive, even angry, which was unlike him.
The next day, while cleaning out his car, I found the receipt for a stroller—$380 from a baby boutique. We didn’t have a baby. But Rachel, his coworker who I barely knew, was pregnant. My gut told me the truth before my brain caught up.
