A Chance Encounter That Changed a Life
While making his usual rounds through the streets of Kraljevo, Serbia, animal rescuer Goran Marinkovic carried more than compassion—he carried food for over a hundred stray animals who depend on his daily visits. While on his mission, he came across a fragile little puppy whose condition stopped him in his tracks.
A Cry for Help Among the Rocks
As he was passing through a narrow alleyway, Marinkovic heard a faint cry echoing from a pile of stones nearby. “She was cold, hungry and thirsty. I had food, so right away I gave her salami,” he told The Dodo. What he found was heartbreaking: a tiny dog curled up beside discarded trash, taking shelter inside an old boot. There were no other dogs around, and it was clear she was far too young to be surviving alone.
When he stepped closer, the puppy immediately rolled onto her back in a vulnerable posture, exposing her belly. “She was exhausted,” Marinkovic said. “She knew that I might be her only chance, so she lay down and surrendered to fate.”
A Rescue Mission Begins
Without hesitation, Marinkovic gently picked up the weak puppy and rushed her to a veterinary clinic. He feared that her time on the streets had taken too much of a toll on her health. He named her Coco and anxiously waited to see if she would recover.
To his relief, Coco began to bounce back. As her strength returned, so did her joyful spirit. “She loves people,” Marinkovic said. “She’s always cheerful.”
From the Streets to a New Life
Coco’s photos quickly gained attention online, and Marinkovic was flooded with adoption offers. Despite the interest, he was determined to place her in the best hands possible. He reached out to a trusted rescue partner who specialized in international adoptions, and soon Coco was ready for a new beginning.
After receiving her vaccinations, Coco made the journey to Germany, where she joined a loving family. A year later, she looked like a completely different dog—healthy, fluffy, and full of life.
“[Coco] has a beautiful home and she is currently on vacation. I get pictures regularly — they’re at sea right now,” Marinkovic shared. “Every rescued dog from the street who finds a home is a victory for me.”
Hope for Serbia’s Forgotten Animals
While Coco’s story has a happy ending, Marinkovic knows that many other strays still suffer in silence. But with his continued efforts—and the support of others who care—more dogs like Coco have a chance to find safety and love.
