Owner surrenders are all too common at shelters, often due to allergies, financial struggles, or housing restrictions. Some cases, however, are more heartbreaking than others.
In 2018, a small dog named Hattie was taken to a Dallas-area shelter with a massive tumor on her left side. Her owners had let it grow unchecked for two years before finally surrendering her—expecting euthanasia to be the only option.

Rescuers from Dallas DogRRR saw Hattie’s condition and refused to give up on her. Determined to give her a real chance, they brought her to Vet Ranch, a group dedicated to helping abandoned animals in need of medical care.
The tumor, weighing 15 pounds—nearly half of Hattie’s body weight—made walking difficult, putting strain on her legs. Dr. Carey, the veterinarian overseeing her case, worried about the involvement of major blood vessels and muscles. Still, Hattie remained cheerful, adapting to her condition with resilience.
Surgery was risky, but the team moved forward, knowing it was her only hope. Against the odds, they successfully removed the tumor, setting Hattie on the path to recovery. Adjusting to life without the extra weight took time, but her determination never wavered.
By December 2018, Hattie had not only healed but had found a loving home. Her adoptive family shared updates on Facebook, celebrating her new life: “She has a house with a yard, a big fur sister, and full freedom at home.
Every night, she sleeps in a king-size bed.” Though she still faces some medical challenges, regular vet visits keep her in good health.
Once left to suffer, Hattie is now a happy, carefree senior dog surrounded by love. Her story highlights the power of second chances, the dedication of rescuers, and the kindness of those who see past an animal’s struggles to the life they still deserve.
