We stood in hesitation, not knowing what to do. The soldier lay motionless, his breathing barely visible. The shepherd kept circling around his master, sometimes growling, sometimes sharply glancing at the approaching passersby. It seemed like one more step, and he would lunge to protect him. People began to stop, a crowd gathered, but no one dared to come closer.
Then an elderly woman, who clearly understood dogs, said in a firm voice:
— He is not vicious, he is afraid of losing his master. We need to show him that we want to help.
She was the first to take a step, slowly knelt down, and spoke to the dog in a soft, calm tone. The shepherd became alert, but did not growl anymore — he just followed every move with trembling eyes. Gradually, two more men joined her: one called an ambulance, the other pulled out a bottle of water.
The minutes felt like an eternity. But when the dog finally allowed them to carefully turn the soldier onto his back, everyone sighed in relief — he was breathing. He had just lost consciousness. Only a few minutes later, the medics arrived and provided help.
And the shepherd, all that time, sat nearby, staring at his master without looking away and whining quietly, as if living through every second with him. When the man was taken away in the ambulance, the dog ran after it, not allowing them to be separated.
We remained standing in the park, shaken by what had happened. None of us will ever forget that day — not only because of the unexpected incident, but also because of the loyalty and strength of love that a dog can carry within. Sometimes an animal understands and feels more than a human.
