When my mom found love again at 45, I genuinely wanted to support her. After years of loneliness following my parents’ divorce, she finally sounded happy and hopeful again. But the moment I met her new fiancé, something didn’t sit right with me.

I even helped her create a dating profile, hoping she might meet someone kind and trustworthy. But for a long time, no one truly interested her.
That’s why I was excited when she finally called one day sounding happier than I’d heard in years. She told me she had met someone special and wanted me to come over for dinner to meet him.
She said his name was Aaron and that he worked as a pastry chef.
Wanting to make a good impression, I stopped to buy a bottle of wine on my way there, even though money was tight for me at the time. I was already struggling financially while trying to save enough to someday open my own restaurant, so the purchase felt like a luxury I couldn’t really afford.

On the drive over, I mentally prepared questions for Aaron, remembering how carefully my mom used to question my own dates when I was younger. Now it felt like my turn to protect her.
