A very brave little boy!
The detail that makes this so powerful is that Noah was already outside, but still went back for the family dog. At only 5 years old, he understood that the dog was part of the family too.
This is why the Bartow County Fire Department called his actions extraordinary. Noah helped save seven family members, his little sister, and the family dog before [fi.refi.ghters] even arrived.
It happened on Sunday, February 9, 2020. Noah was asleep in the bedroom he shared with his 2-year-old sister when smoke and [fl.am.es fi.ll.ed] the room. Fire officials later said the [fi.re] started from an overloaded electrical outlet in the bedroom, and in that moment, the only available way out was a window.
For a child that young, it could have been [pa.raly.zing].
But Noah did not freeze.
He got out of bed, grabbed his little sister, and helped her escape through the window. Then, even after making it outside, he went back for the family dog and got the dog out too. After that, he ran next door to his uncle’s house for help, and together they alerted the rest of the family.
By the time the [fi.re] was over, Noah was credited with helping save himself, his sister, the family dog, and seven other family members. Noah and four relatives were [treated] for minor [bu.rns] and smoke inhalation, but everyone survived.
Bartow County Fire Department Chief Dwayne Jamison said [fi.refighters] had seen children alert their families before, but what Noah did at just 5 years old was extraordinary. He explained that trained firefighters can work an entire career hoping for the chance to make a true lifesaving intervention, and Noah had done exactly that before [fi.refighters] even arrived.
On Friday, February 14, 2020, the department honored Noah as an honorary Bartow County firefighter and presented him with a lifesaving award, a recognition typically reserved for professional rescuers. He also received his own badge and helmet, and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp sent a letter recognizing his bravery.
But beyond every award, the heart of this story is simple.
A 5-year-old boy woke up in [da.ng.er] and thought of his baby sister.
Then he thought of the dog.
Then he thought of the rest of his family.
His grandfather, David Woods, later said that if it had not been for Noah, they might not be here today.
That is what makes this story so unforgettable.
Noah did not have a uniform yet.
He did not have training.
He was just a little boy who loved his family enough to act when every second mattered.
And because he did, a sister, a dog, and an entire family got out alive.
