Every day, animal rescuers encounter desperate situations, doing everything they can to help animals in need.

Kristen Gamble, co-founder of One Mutt at a Time Rescue in Riverside, California, is one such rescuer who demonstrated extraordinary compassion when she learned about a dog family trapped in an abandoned home.

A Heartbreaking Discovery

The story began when Kristen saw a neighbor’s video on social media showing a family of dogs living in squalor after their owner had passed away.

The house, located in Phelan, California, was in an appalling state, but Kristen didn’t hesitate for a moment.

She immediately made her way to the property to help.

After contacting the homeowner’s daughter, Kristen was granted access to the house.

Despite knowing what to expect from the video, she was shocked to witness the dire conditions firsthand.

“The house was unbelievable,” Kristen told Rocky Kanaka. “The dogs had been trapped in the house alone for six weeks. They were very skinny.”

The situation was so dire that the neighbor who initially posted the video began feeding the dogs during their final week of confinement.

Realizing the severity of the situation, he reached out for help.

A Dire Situation

The house was completely unlivable. “The floors were so urine-soaked we thought we might fall through,” Kristen explained.

To contain the dogs, the neighbor had set up a barrier, confining them upstairs.

When Kristen and her team reached the upper level, they were greeted by the sound of barking and whimpering.

There, they found nine six-week-old puppies along with their mother and father.

The mother, a small Shepherd mix, was named Klara, and the father, a Corgi-Husky mix, was named Kolbi. The rescuers could only imagine the suffering this family had endured.

A Journey to Safety

After weeks of confinement, Klara, Kolbi, and their puppies were finally freed from the squalid house.

The team transported them to One Mutt at a Time Rescue in Riverside, California, where they received their first taste of safety and care.

Kristen, determined to provide this family with a brighter future, quickly found them a foster home.

Vanessa Traufler-Samarripa, a board member and volunteer at the rescue, graciously stepped up despite already fostering ten cats and four dogs.

Vanessa was especially delighted by the puppies, whose innocent eyes radiated love and hope.

Seeing Klara and Kolbi’s happiness at their puppies’ newfound safety was equally heartwarming.

A Brighter Future

Though Klara, Kolbi, and their puppies have yet to find their forever homes, they are well on their way to a better life.

Thanks to the kindness of rescuers like Kristen and Vanessa, this dog family has been given a second chance.

Their story is a reminder of the profound impact that compassion and dedication can have on the lives of animals in need.

With love and care, Klara, Kolbi, and their puppies are destined for a bright and happy future.
