It began as an ordinary morning—coffee, chores, routine. Taking out the trash, I noticed a black plastic bag near the bins. Nothing unusual—until it moved.
Inside were two pairs of frightened eyes. A tiny puppy, trembling, and behind him, a fragile kitten, pressed close for safety. Someone had abandoned them like garbage—no note, no collar, no chance.
Yet in that hopeless moment, the puppy shielded the kitten with his body, eyes pleading not for himself, but for her.
I gently opened the bag, greeted by heat and fear. “You’re safe now,” I whispered. The puppy hesitated, then let me lift them both out. I held them together, unwilling to separate what cruelty had tried to destroy.
At home, the puppy curled around the kitten, refusing food until she drank first. Even in safety, he remained her guardian.
