I married Claire, a wonderful woman and single mom to two girls, Emma (8) and Lily (6). In our first week together, I noticed them whispering and glancing at the basement door. One evening, Emma asked, “Do you ever wonder what’s in the basement?” with a serious tone. The next morning, Lily casually said, “Daddy hates loud noises,” which caught me off guard, as Claire had only mentioned their dad was “gone.”
One day, while Claire was at work, Emma and Lily asked if I wanted to visit Daddy… in the basement. I was stunned. Was Claire hiding something? Was their dad still alive?
The house felt warm and homey, but there was something unsettling about the basement door. The girls often glanced at it, and Claire seemed unaware, or perhaps pretending. Emma once asked, “Do you ever think about what’s in the basement?” I laughed it off, but it left me uneasy. Lily, too, made strange comments, like humming, “Daddy hates loud noises.”
A few days later, Lily casually mentioned their dad in a drawing, saying the figure was “Daddy” and that the box around him was their basement. This made me even more curious, but I didn’t press Claire.
Later that week, I finally asked Claire about it. She dismissed my concerns, claiming it was just an old, damp basement. When I asked about their dad, she said he passed away two years ago, but the grief was still heavy on her.
The next week, while the girls were sick, Emma asked again if I wanted to visit Dad in the basement. I was left shaken and confused, unsure of what to believe.
