After 372 days of waiting, a beloved dog is finally adopted after being rescued from euthanasia

Posted on May 20, 2026 by admin

For any animal shelter, there is no greater feeling than the moment when one of their beloved pets has found a home; especially if they have been living at the shelter for an extended period.

On an extraordinary day, the celebration began when Major – a pup who had spent a full year in a shelter after being saved from euthanasia- arrived at his forever home.

As reported by ABC Chicago, Major and his brother Hilo were rescued from the brink of euthanasia at an animal control center in Quincy, Illinois. Thankfully, they were saved in the nick of time thanks to the Naperville Area Humane Society’s heroic efforts.

Sadly, after being taken in by the shelter, these two  had difficulty finding their forever homes. Unfortunately for them, an entire year passed without anyone offering to adopt them into a loving family.

The humane society described Major as spirited, peppy, and treat-driven; however, they advised that he shouldn’t be kept in a household with cats or other dogs, nor should it include young children.

Despite the slim chances, the shelter held onto a glimmer of hope that Major would finally find him forever home. To honor him and all other long-term canine inhabitants at their facility, they created “Major’s Day” to showcase these deserving pooches in need of adoption.

After 372 days in the shelter, Major’s luck changed; he was adopted! The Naperville Area Humane Society shared their elation over his adoption.

The shelter personnel gathered outside, emotionally bidding goodbye to Major with heartfelt farewells, and the loyal pup reciprocated by saying his goodbyes. This emotional scene was captured on video as a lasting memory.

Concluding the video, Major and his new owner–a semi-truck driver–snuggle in the truck cab, setting off on an exciting journey that will take them all over America.

The National Association of Homeless Services (NAHS) is ecstatic to have Major join their long list of individuals who are walking out the doors, stronger and more independent than ever. We look forward to following his journey as he embarks on this next chapter in life!

We are elated that Major has a new home! May he embark on amazing journeys throughout the nation with his loving adopter and enjoy every second of it.

Share the happy news with your friends and family.
