CANTON, Ohio (WJW) – The Canton Fire Department is investigating after a woman was hospitalized and a dog was killed in a house fire Wednesday afternoon.
Canton firefighters responded to a burning home in the 600 block of Union Ave. SW around 1 p.m.
When they got there, firefighters found heavy flames shooting up from the back of the two-story house.

Two women and a man were getting out of the home when fire crews arrived. According to fire officials, one woman was taken to Aultman Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Residents were able to pull two birds and a dog from the home, but firefighters learned that other animals were still inside.
Firefighters found and rescued another dog from the fire. The dog, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation, was taken by a family friend to a veterinarian.

Two cats were found alive after the flames were extinguished, but one dog died in the fire.
According to the Canton Fire Department, the home suffered substantial damage and will likely need to be destroyed. The Red Cross is working with the family at this time.
According to a Friday press release from the Canton Fire Department, the cause of the fire was determined to bean unattended candle on the dresser in a garage that a woman was living in.
