Once upon a time, a son made a difficult decision. Following the passing of his father, he chose to place his mother in an old age home, visiting her occasionally. It was his way of balancing life’s demands while ensuring she received care.
One day, he got an urgent call from the home. His mother was seriously ill, and they suggested he visit her immediately. Rushing to her side, he found her frail and lying in bed.
Concerned and emotional, he gently asked her, “Mother, is there anything I can do for you?”
With a soft yet firm voice, she responded, “Please, install fans here. There’s not a single one, and it can get very uncomfortable. A fridge would also be wonderful to help keep the food fresh; many times I’ve gone to bed hungry because the food spoiled.”
The son was taken aback. “But Mom, why didn’t you tell me this before? Why wait until now?” He could hardly believe she had kept this from him until now.
Her gaze was steady as she explained, “I didn’t say anything because I knew you had your reasons. But I’m asking now because I want things to be better for everyone here.
One day, perhaps your own children might leave you in a place like this. And by then, I hope it will be a bit more comfortable than it is today.”
Her words lingered in the air, carrying wisdom and love. “Remember, my dear,” she continued softly, “what you give is what you get.”
As he listened, tears welled up in his eyes, realizing the depth of her love and the life lesson she was still teaching him, even as she lay there, her final moments drawing near. It was a poignant moment, a reminder of the circle of life and the importance of caring for those who once cared for us.
