Birdie, the former stray who learned to race along the beach in a wheelchair, has arrived at a forever home designed to help her get around.
Her new person, Debbie, has years of experience caring for dogs with special needs, and Birdie has a whole pack of canine siblings waiting to welcome her.
Expedition Ola shared the homecoming after months of rescue, surgery, and recovery. Nick Reilly and Alli Jaeger stayed overnight to help Birdie settle in, but according to their update, she was already finding friends and fitting into the family without much assistance.
The couple first encountered Birdie on a dirt road in Baja, Mexico, where she was dragging her paralyzed back legs. They stopped to help and brought her into their care, later sharing that X-rays revealed a severe spinal injury.
By then, helping street dogs had become their full-time mission. They had rescued a dog named Ola in 2023 and found her an adoptive family, then decided to continue rescuing after the death of their own dog a few months later.
Traveling along Mexico’s west coast as Expedition Ola, they offered dogs veterinary care and a place in their mobile pack while arranging adoptions. In their NBC News interview, they said they had rescued 36 street dogs.
Birdie made little chirping sounds when she was excited, earning her a name that fit. When her rescuers got her a wheelchair, she needed some encouragement before discovering just how fast she could go. One of her rescuers jogged beside her on the beach while she learned to move with the cart. Soon, Birdie was racing across the sand, sometimes moving so quickly that she knocked over the couple’s dog, Bodie.
But between beach adventures, Birdie still needed medical care. She underwent surgery to amputate both back legs and her tail, with donations helping cover her veterinary bills.
Complications kept her in the hospital longer than expected before she could return to Nick and Alli to continue healing. In September, they helped her back into her wheelchair, taking extra care to keep it from rubbing against her healing incision.
Birdie’s new home offers places to rest quietly, other dogs to play with, and opportunities to spend time outdoors. Expedition Ola described the home as built for accessibility and freedom, with a pool they hope Birdie can enjoy for future swims.
Debbie is home throughout the day and has dedicated years to caring for dogs like Birdie, the couple said. Wheelchairs, diapers, bladder care, and skin care are familiar parts of life in her household.
At night, the dogs can sleep in bed with Debbie or choose another place to settle. Birdie’s rescuers said she was already content, enjoying the pack and making new canine friends.
Birdie Settles In With Her New Family
Reilly and Jaeger also brought Birdie’s small playpen to her new home. They reported that her incision had closed and wanted to continue protecting it as she settled in.
The couple’s update made their feelings about the match clear: “Different doesn’t mean less.” They described a future that still includes outings, meeting people, and the adventures Birdie has come to enjoy.
For now, she has Debbie, new dog friends, and a home prepared for her daily care. The little dog whose chirps inspired her name has reached a place where she can rest, play, and keep being Birdie.
